The process of a burial in Cologne
The burial usually begins with a funeral service. In most cases, the ceremony takes place in a cemetery chapel or church. It can be enriched by music, personal speeches and symbolic acts, such as the laying of flowers or the blessing. The organization of this celebration can vary greatly depending on the faith, tradition or personal wishes of the deceased person and their relatives. It doesn't have to be quiet and grey anymore, but should suit you and the deceased person. We are happy to support you here with ideas.
After the funeral service, the coffin is accompanied to the grave by the mourning community. The actual burial takes place there, during which the coffin is lowered into the ground. A final greeting is often said at this point, a prayer is recited or a poem is recited. Many relatives find the farewell ritual of throwing the earth — in which soil or flowers are sprinkled on the coffin — as particularly connecting and comforting. After the burial, the survivors are left with a grave, which they can visit as a place of remembrance and reflection.
