The coffin is a central element of a burial. It is the last place a person is buried in before they find their final resting place. Choosing the right coffin is therefore of great importance and should be made with care. In addition to form, material and design, costs also play an important role. In this article, we give a detailed overview of the prices and what needs to be considered.
The range of coffin prices
The cost of a coffin can vary greatly. Simple models made of pine or spruce wood are available from around 400 euros. Higher quality coffins made of oak wood and/or with elaborate decorations, on the other hand, can cost several thousand euros. Experience has shown that the majority of the coffin models in demand are in the price range between 600 and 1,500 euros.

Factors influencing the price of a coffin
Material and workmanship
The coffin material used has a big influence on the price. Inexpensive variants usually consist of softwoods such as pine or spruce. Medium price ranges often offer larch or oak coffins. The highest quality and most expensive are solid wood coffins made from precious woods such as mahogany or walnut.
Basically, solid wood coffins are more expensive than standard models with wood veneer or chipboard. The quality of workmanship and density of the wood used also has an effect on pricing.
coffin size
The size of the coffin required depends on the body size of the deceased. Standard sizes up to 1.90 m are the most common and can be found in all price ranges. For body sizes over 1.90 m or very plump deceased people, oversized or extra-wide coffins are required, which result in correspondingly higher costs - an average additional 100 to 300 euros. Children's coffins up to 1.20 m are cheaper due to lower quantities of material and fortunately less demand.
Furnishing and ornaments
On request, a coffin can be customized with various extras. These include high-quality blankets, pillows and upholstery, intricate carvings, symbols and fittings. Depending on expenditure and materials, the optional equipment increases total costs by up to 500 euros and more.
Coffin costs and advice from us
We would be happy to help you find the right coffin for the last farewell. In a non-binding consultation, we will work together to determine your wishes in terms of appearance, quality and budget. Based on our transparently designed price lists, you can then make a selection in peace and quiet.
In general, we believe that the chosen coffin should adequately reflect the deceased's appreciation in terms of quality and price. We therefore advise against the cheapest coffin models. The solid mid-range between 800 and 1500 euros usually offers a good balance of price and quality.
In order to be able to select the coffin as independently of the budget and free of constraints as possible, we recommend early funeral planning. With a trust pension account or taking out death benefit insurance, the selection of the coffin model can also be very well financially secured.
